My first This vs. That post, which was on Dishwasher Detergent, turned out to be one of my most popular blog posts so I decided to make this a series! Now that we've dug around and learned a bit about what's in your dishwasher detergent, lets take a closer look at something that is applied directly to our skulls... This vs. That: Shampoo Edition is here!
Like mentioned in so many previous posts, we do not have many regulations in the United States to ensure that our bath and beauty products are safe- which is why I’ve become a Beautycounter consultant, to help educate and facilitate the switch to safer beauty products.
Beauty products from the store and salons (yes even and especially the “higher end” brands) contain very questionable and toxic ingredients and no warning label or disclosure information is legally required. This is a huge fault in our regulation system and because of it we must self-educate to ensure our safety, health and wellbeing.
Upon doing my research most shampoos (despite if they advertise that they are “all natural”) rate within the same range, 4-6 (moderate) for toxicity according to the EWG*. Moderate toxicity is not ok.
How often do you use shampoo? Every day, every other day? If you use a product regularly, at a moderate toxicity rate, the multiple exposure risks you are getting from those products becomes cumulative. Once in a blue moon I may overlook a moderate hazard rating - but daily or weekly use, not a chance! Look for a product with low toxicity ratings to ease the burden on the one body you were given to take care of.
After hours of research I found only a couple brands that I can recommend with a clear conscious. Alright, let's get to it!
Garnier Fructis Smooth and Sleek: Score 6
Garnier Fructis Whole Blends Shampoo: Score 5
Dove Shampoos: Score 5
Paul Mitchel Shampoos: Score 5
Alba Hawaiian Drink It Up Coconut Milk Shampoo: Score 5
TRESemme shampoo: Score 5
OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo: Score 5
Pantene Shampoos: Score 5
Avalon Organics Shampoo: Score 4
Herbal Essence Naked Shampoo: Score 4
Weleda Oat Replenishing Shampoo: Score 4
Nature's Gate Shampoos: Score 4
Kiss My Face Whenever Shampoo: Score 4
Shea Moisture Shampoo: Score 1-4
It's interesting how brands like Alba, OGX, Avalon Organics and Kiss My Face score, are on average the same as brands like Garnier Fructis, Herbal Essence, Pantene and Dove. This proves how green washing and advertising can really change a consumer's perspective but does not translate to product safety.
Shea Moisture can be found at Target and is a great option if you're out of shampoo and need it ASAP. Make sure you get the Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention or the Coconut & Hibiscus Curl and Shine shampoo as they rate 1. Other products by Shea Moisture (including shampoos) rate very high on the toxicity scale, some of their products rate as high as an 8! I can't get behind a company that has this level of inconsistencies with their products, however, in a pinch it could be a good option. Make sure you look up each individual product prior to purchasing so you can purchase with informed decision making. View their full EWG Rating here.
